Job Summary

The program coordinator of the diversity, equity & inclusion center provides vision and leadership for a variety of programs and services to facilitate success, access, retention, and completion for all students, including students from historically underrepresented populations. The coordinator is responsible for the creation, development, implementation, and operation of a broad spectrum of student development programs and events that meet the needs of the campus community. The coordinator will work to further enhance the development of the college’s support for the intersectionality of student identities. The coordinator will also advise and collaborate with diverse student clubs and campus departments to enhance students’ sense of belonging.Β 

Essential Functions

  • Maintain a vibrant and welcoming center that provides day to day support to students including community resources, lending library, computer/printers.
  • Serve as an overall advisor to WVC cultural and Identity based clubs, including MEChA, QSA, Culture Club, and other clubs who use the Center regularly.
  • Network with the campus and local community to plan diversity and multicultural events and learning opportunities, with a strong focus on WVC’s mission of being a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Including (but not limited to) Stand Against Racism, Dia de los Muertos, Native American Heritage Month, International Education Week, Black History month, Pride Week and Disability Awareness month activities.
  • Collaborate with clubs & organizations to celebrate cultural events. Plan events that celebrate WVC international students.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with faculty and other student services staff who may assist with student programs and events.
  • Recruit students, review applications and travel arrangements for the yearly Students of Color Conference and attend as lead advisor.
  • Plan, develop, promote and implement programs for students such as guest speakers, book groups, documentaries, cultural celebrations, and relevant training.
  • Work closely with ASWVC Senate’s director of diversity to advise and collaborate on events
  • Recruit, hire, and train student assistants for the Center.
  • Provide administrative support to Clubs including club recognition, training, and support.
  • Provide leadership and diversity training to the student government team, and other student leaders.Β 
  • Provide cultural and identity-based training and resources for WVC staff/faculty.
  • Be an active member of the Student Life team, including collaborating on department wide events.
  • Manage the Knights Kupboard (food pantry), including managing staff/volunteers, maintaining supplies and donations, and marketing the resource to students.
  • Serve on relevant campus committees, connect with community resources that focus on DEI work with the community.
  • Keep the diversity, equity & inclusion website and social media pages up the date with events and resources
  • Implement culturally relevant and anti-racist best practices.
  • Make recommendations and implement strategies to strengthen WVC’s status of being an HSI.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associates degree.
  • Basic event planning experience.
  • Two years related experience or equivalent education/experience.
  • Proficiency with word processing, email, and spreadsheet software.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to apply student identity development theories.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish – reading, writing, speaking)
  • Proficiency in database, desktop publishing, PowerPoint, financial and photo software.
  • Highly motivated, organized and self-directed.
  • Ability to work independently and contribute collaboratively to a team environment, while effectively managing competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.

  • Professionalism: Approach others in a tactful manner, react well under pressure, treat others with respect and consideration and follow through on commitments.
  • Problem solving: Ability to assess situations and think beyond the immediate issue to anticipate and fulfill future needs before they become complications.
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion: Demonstrated competency and experience working in a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds and those with physical, emotional and/or learning disabilities.
  • Technical/computer skills: High level of proficiency and accuracy in Microsoft Office; familiarity with Canvas, PeopleSoft, and other college systems; ability to be cross trained to provide basic technical support.
  • Student services: Knowledge of college processes such as admissions, enrollment, and financial aid; ability to be cross trained to provide student services support.
  • FERPA: Maintain a high level of confidentiality and follow FERPA guidelines.

Terms of Employment:

The current vacancy in student affairs is a full-time, overtime and benefit eligible position expected to begin as soon as possible. The starting salary hiring range is $41,724 annually ($19.98 per hour) to $46,920 annually ($22.47 per hour). Individual placement within the hiring range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills and abilities related to the position.

Work Schedule & Environment:

  • Work hours are generally 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; hours and days may change depending on the needs of the college. Work in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Regular and consistent attendance required.
