The Diversity Programs Office Graduate Intern will develop a foundation for providing student support assistance to UVA graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and undergraduate summer student participants all focused on promoting career development and graduate studies. The intern will plan program calendars, support in the development of student support programs for members from marginalized communities, conduct and coordinate recruitment and outreach activities for undergraduate summer program participants, and serve as a major point of contact for summer students at the university, and assist with additional projects in the office such as but not limited to planning and leading graduate student workshops, website maintenance and program evaluations.

Special consideration will be given to applicants with a sincere interest in diversity, equity, and inclusion programming, with previous experience working with underrepresented and underserved populations and/or previous related experience in counseling/advising, and program evaluation.

Specific responsibilities will include:

The graduate intern will be trained to work with current UVA graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and undergraduate summer students to provide general career path guidance, and graduate and professional school choice and applications.

Special areas of assignment may include a mix of the following:

  • Serving students from underrepresented and underserved populations
  • Conducting benchmarking and research for diversity newsletters and website content
  • Researching and managing diversity program resource materials
  • Assisting with the activities, programs, and services affiliated with the UVA Mentoring Institute program
  • Helping with outreach and engagement with Minority Serving Institutions
  • Coordinate and execute undergraduate summer research program workshops
  • Planning incoming graduate student orientation sessions
  • Planning and executing the Diversity Programs Office annual diversity programs, such as the Diversity retreat, Celebration of Excellence, and the Doctoral Diversity Dinner
  • Spearhead engagement with UVA student affinity groups and organizations

Expectations & Outcomes

In addition to the responsibilities outlined above, the Graduate Intern will be expected to:

  • Current graduate student at the University of Virginia.
  • Maintain a schedule of 10 to 20 hours per week.
  • Willingness to take instruction/guidance and meet regularly with a supervisor.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of constituencies, individually and collectively in groups.
  • Develop credible, working relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders.
  • Maintain office standards and protocol with respect to processes, confidentiality, and other issues.
  • Ability to organize and work independently on assigned tasks.
  • Possess strong organizational, communication, facilitation & time management skills.
  • Manage multiple projects.
  • Possess strong computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite- especially excel spread sheets.
  • Familiarity with Drupal and other website development software programs preferred.
  • Experience with internet-based research.
  • Appreciate and internalize professional standards and ethics.
  • Be flexible, open-minded, pro-active, and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Support the mission of the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs.

Compensation

10 to 20 hours per week at $20 per hour. The Diversity Programs Office Graduate Internship is available throughout the entire academic year to include the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Bachelor's degree. Registered as a graduate student. Experience: none Licensure: None PHYSICAL DEMANDS This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
